[…] WP Plugin: Custom Admin Menu This plugin will let you customize just about everything having to do with the organization of your Wordpress administration. You can relabel and rearrange menu items. You can create sub-sub-sub-menus, or nest menus as deeply as you want! You can change the parent of a submenu item, or move a submenu item to the top-level menu. You can move something from the top-level menu to a submenu. You can hide any menu or submenu item. There is also a screencast for those interested in seeing its functionality. […]

Is this working with the latest SVN version of wordpress?

BTW, I like that you showed what you can do with this plugin on a video. I find this very useful to decide if I want this plugin or not.

  3. Barun

    Benoit —

I haven’t tested the latest SVN version of Wordpress, but the only thing this plugin really requires is that a few internal variables that contain relevant info about the menu and submenu data haven’t changed names and that the relevant action hooks are still in place… So, long story short, I would guess that it works, but I haven’t tried it. Perhaps you could try it out and let me know?

Glad you liked the video. Took me forever to figure out how to get the screencast as a flash video embedded into the website : )

Yeah, I get that error too.

Plus can you make it work on admin drop down menus?

  7. Barun

Monika/ MASA — could you give me some more details about exactly when and where this occurs? For example: Did you just see it once when you first activated the plugin, or does it appear on every page? Does it show up at the very top of the page (above all the content) or somewhere else? Also, what version of Wordpress are you using? A few details might help me track the bug a bit faster; thanks.

MASA — never used the dropdown menu plugin before; when i get time i will take a look

  8. Norbert

    Hi Barun,

this is an astonishing piece of code! It works like a charm, though I got the same error as Monika and Masa. In wordpress 2.0.5 the error rises only at first activation and shows up at the very top of the page.

Thanks a lot for this great work and greetings from germany.

    Hello all —

The minor bug described above (by Monika, Masa, and Norbert) has been fixed. I’ve updated all of the download links with the new software version (now v1.01 instead of v1.0).

Well, the menu disappear completely in wordpress SVN. I think they are changing the structure of the menus. You can always check the TRAC for more information as I’m not really an expert in that field.

  16. Barun

Benoit - thanks for looking into it. I’ll check it out when I get a chance and see how much the plugin code will need to change in order to accommodate the new release.

  17. neville

It looks to be a great plugin, Barun, thanks for developing it.

However, I just installed it and had exactly the same problem as Benoit - the menu vanishes entirely. No menu at all, in fact. I’m using WP 2.0.5, not an SVN.

Neville, Benoit — okay, I’ve fixed the problem. In trying to correct the very minor bug that was first reported, I made a modification that prevented the custom menu from being displayed at all; don’t know how this passed my testing. Oh well — can you try out the new version and let me know if it works for you? (The download link has been corrected to point to version 1.02 now)

  20. James

    Hello Barun,

Your plugin looks impressive but I am unable to download. Have you changed the download link perhaps?

  21. Jason

I installed this early this morning and only now got around to checking it out - when I choose to activate the custom menu my menus all together disappear… I noticed you have updated it since so I tired to download but I receive an error 404 page missing or such.

  22. Barun

James / Jason — the text link was indeed broken (the download link at the top was still working); I’ve fixed it now. Thanks for the notice.

  23. Jason

How about being able to add a new menu item. Say for example I wanted to add a menu item called “Favorite Plugins” for plugins that I always access, while still keeping my standard plugin menu item containing my not so frequently used plugins?

    Jason

  24. Barun

Jason - unfortunately, that’s not a feature that is likely to exist in this plugin, and here’s why: what you’re describing would require the plugin to not just create a new menu item but also to create a new page that menu item points to. But how could it possibly know what PHP code to use to create any arbitrary page?

If you are just trying to move your rarely-used administration menu items out of sight, you can do one of two things:

    (1) pick an existing page and move all of your rarely used menu items underneath it, so that they’re all colocated

    and / or

    (2) hide whichever pages you don’t really use; you can always use this plugin to unhide them when you need them

Jason, I may have a solution for you: I put together a tiny plug-in that creates a “Blank” top-level menu. You can find it here: http://n0tablog.wordpress.com/my-wordpress-plug-ins/blank-admin-page/

BUG/(feature?) report: Barun, when in active mode, your wonderful plug-in interferes with the page formatting of Owen Winkler’s Role Manager. It turns the roles list from table to a single column (much harder to grasp). Probably due to coinciding style names somewhere?

    Hi Barun,

Incredible little app you wrote! I wasn’t able to get it to work on my site for some reason. I get this message at the top of the custom admin page:

“Your custom administration menu has been suspended — verify the configuration below in order to reactivate it. Any new items created by the activation of plugins are shown in red below…”

This is with all of my other custom plugins deactivated, so nothing is showing in red.

Thanks for any help in advance!

  37. Steve Sensenig

Like Colby, I got the “Your custom administration menu has been suspended…” message the first time I went to the options page after activating it. However, I just clicked “Yes” to the option to use the custom menu, and that message has not shown up. The custom menu worked fine from that point on.

One thing I did have trouble with, though, is the Akismet plugin. When the custom menu is turned on, clicking on the link under Manage that allows me to view messages trapped (the one that says “Akismet Spam (4)” or however many spam messages are currently trapped) takes me instead to the Akismet configuration page (where I am able to put in the key). This is true even if I have restored my custom menu to the default settings. Just by virtue of saying “Yes” to using the customized menu, the Akismet spam page will not show me trapped messages.

    I am using WP 2.0.4

Apart from the Akismet problem, and that message about being suspended at the beginning, I have not seen any other problems, and I LOVE this plugin!

Let me know if you need any more information about the Akismet situation.

    steve :)

Hello Barun, I really like your piece of neat plugin. However, I found something isn’t working well. Is it possible to get the “Awaiting Moderation” tab working as normal? I mean, when I setup my new admin menu, my “Awaiting Moderation” is showing (1). And even I have no comments awaiting moderation now, it will still show (1).

I have now renamed it to get rid of the (1). If it’s possible, make it to be like before. This plugin is near perfect, and I love it a lot. Thanks very much.

    hi Barun
I tried this plugin and it works really excellent. But just to let you know a small prob in this. When I tried to make it work on IE7, it shows script error and not submitting the page. But it works really great in IE6 and Firefox.
As a suggestion, I would like to tell you that, if you have an option to add a new menu item, I think it will solve all sorts of problem
    Appreciating your excellent work

    Thanks

    Hello,

    Hi Barun,

Just thought I would let you know that I tried installing your plugin on my testing server using MacOSX, but it didn’t appear at all in the menu until I changed all files’ read permissions. I’m not sure why this would have been the case, cause I don’t have to do that with other plugins I download, but nonetheless there it is!

  45. Paul

    I’m getting the same:

message, i’ve tried re-installing and turning everything else off but nothing seems to get it up and running :(

    any ideas?
    Thanks

  46. Raena

    Hi Barun,

I thought I’d let you know there was a problem with installing your plugin on my site which I run locally on my MacOS X machine (it’s a testing thing) — I had to change the permissions on every file to get it to be visible to WordPress.

This hasn’t happened with other plugins, so I wondered if it was something you might have done.

  47. Raena

    PS, I loved your screencast!

It is really a good idea to use videos to display the plugin in action.

  50. Barun

I haven’t had a chance to reply to messages in a few days, but I’ve been reading them. So if you’ve left a comment and haven’t yet received a response from me, you should see one below:

andrabr (#32, #33) — I’ll see if I can make this compatible with Role Manager and the drop down menu plugin.

Steve (#37) — I’m not sure why the Akismet link wouldn’t be working right, but I’ll look into that over the next couple days; should be fixed in the next release of the plugin

Vincent (#39) — The problem you mentioned is a known issue, and one that I plan on having fixed in the next release; thanks for the reminder

Akash & Andreas (#42, #43) — I have no idea why this wouldn’t be working correctly for IE7. I’ll download the new browser on my PC and check it out; hopefully there’s a simple fix…

Raena (#44, #46) — I’m not sure why file permission problems would be cropping up on an OSX server; I haven’t done anything with the files to make that happen (at least not intentionally)

Paul (#45) — Have you tried to just select the “Save Menu” option? The first time you install the plugin, the ’suspended menu’ warning does appear, but it goes away once you save the menu. In the next release I’ll fix this problem so it’s not so confusing.

fv (#48) — Are you using a Mac OS X server? Perhaps you’re having similar permissions errors as what Raena experienced (see her comments, #44 and #46).

If you are still having any problems with the new version, please do let me know.

    For the curious among you:

Thanks to many hours of debugging assistance from Mark Anthony (#55-57, 65, 68 above) who was on IM with me as I asked him to upload new error-logging versions of the plugin onto his site and let me know what happened, I finally was able to figure out that peoples’ problems were due to the fact that the plugin wasn’t configured properly to work with Windows servers (the error was on a single line of code). That problem has now been fixed, and the plugin has been fully tested on a Windows server which is now set up on an old PC of mine. I’ve also included some debugging features to help make things easier in the future.

    Lucia –

Both download links have been updated now; thanks for letting me know that the sidebar button was still linking to version 1.02.

I’ve sent you an email to try to figure out whatever issues you’re having with the plugin. Please be on the lookout for it.

  75. The Johnson

Thank You for deciphering the issue. I am afraid that I downloaded the 1.02 version from the same blue box uptop. It was an error message nightmare in firebug. I was feeling a bit forlorned because I am working on a clients admin. I went to go subscribe to this page as a feed, when loe and behold, you solved the problem not 7 minutes before I visited. I am going to try this out and let you know how it goes.–thanks.

  76. The Johnson

Hello Again, please pardon the formatting, as my carriage returns will not work on this comment box or my tabindex for some reason. it seems that the plugin is still not working properly as it will not allow me to move the boxes around, and I am gettin js errors as I move about in the window once I start trying to drag them. I could only tell you what I see from the firebug console. It says that in prototype.js, lines 299 and 297 have the following errors:

line 299: iterator is not a function
    (no name)(function())prototype.js (line 299)
    _each(function())prototype.js (line 509)
    each(mouse: (105,353)(105,461) xmouse: (105,461) left,top: (0,0)(81,447) type=draginit group=Object mousePosition=(105,353))prototype.js (line 297)

    [Break on this error] iterator(value, index++);

and also on line 297: this._each is not a function
    [Break on this error] this._each(function(value) {

This is all I can do with my deadline today. I am working on a mac, using firefox 2.0.0.1, and wordpress 2.0.4.

  77. Barun

    The Johnson –

The problem you are experiencing is being caused by a naming conflict between the javascript used by this plugin (which is largely derived from ToolMan DHTML package) and the prototype javascript framework, which must be used by some other plugin you have installed. I can’t provide a fix for this immediately, but I’ll investigate it. I think the newer version of ToolMan might have corrected the problem (since prototype is quite popular now) but I’m not sure.

Thanks for letting me know about the issue so that I know to find a fix for it. Keep in tuned to the feed from this page, as I’ll post a comment once I’ve figured this out.

I’d love to use this plugin, but unfortunately it blows up the layout when used in conjunction with Tiger Admin. I’m assuming it applies custom CSS ids to some elements, and Tiger Admin gets confoozed as a result.

Is it a big deal to make your plugin play nicely with Tiger Admin?

  79. Barun

Wayde — Yeah, your guess is right. At the bottom of the Custom Admin Menu options page you can see a setting that lets you choose which administration menu theme you are using. Right now the only options are for the default Wordpress admin menu and the Barunio Admin theme.

Making the plugin work with the Tiger admin menu shouldn’t be too difficult; it’s just a matter of copying some of the css styles, adding a few new ones for nested submenus, and adding the option. I just haven’t had time to do it yet. Since I know there’s a demand for it, I’ll get to it a bit sooner. Expect it to be available in the next release of this plugin. Keep tuned, or subscribe to the RSS feed for this page (link above the first comment) to get informed when that happens.

  80. Wayde Christie

Cheers Barun. If I end up realllllly needing your plugin, I might be adventurous and suss out the style conflicts myself.

Will let you know if I do.

    Thanks for your reply :)

Thanks for this beautiful plugin. The only thing I don’t like is that certain menu items (write post, manage posts) are locked — I know that’s hardcoded into the WordPress admin core files but that’s the thing I’m most keen on changing (I would like to make pages the default). Any leads on that?

  84. Website Traffic

This is a very very nice blog!… But what made you decide on the theme?

  85. GD

Not working for me. It’s activated, but the hide/show icon does not display in Firefox 2. When I try using it in Safari, I click on the hide/show icon it select the item and drags the menu item around. Then I can’t get the item to stay put.

    hello
is it possible to have different setups for lets say one admin and one user.
making a homepage for another person and want only the most important options to be displayed for the user but all options for the admin.

  87. Ninjaboy

Nice work - I love this plugin, and by the way, it all seems to work in WP2.1!

Im sure everyone appreciates the hard work you have put into this, but as Peter said - it really would be great to have one setup for admins and another setup for other users (eg editors)… or is that asking too much!

  88. henkeman

Hi great plugin! However I am having trouble on IE6, WP 2.0.7. The plugin seems to lock when I press “save” the first time (which I´m told to do upon installation..). I get a “sending information”-box which never disappears. I get script error on the page and the drag-n-drop functionality doesnt seem to work.

Is it a browser issue u think? What browsers are reported to work, anybody know?

Greatful for help! And thanx again for a very promising plug-in (as soon as I get it up n running :)

  89. Casey

I’ve downloaded and installed the latest version of the plugin (custom admin) without issue. I opted to hide the dashboard among other things.
However, when you log out, then log back in, you STILL are sent to the Dashboard and it is visible until you click elsewhere, whereupon the dashboard tab disappears.

    WP2.1
    Windows XP in Firefox 1.5.0.9.

This plugin is excellent! Thank you very much for it. I’ve test it, and until now it works just fine.
I had the same problem like Mark. Write Post and Manage Post are locked because in fact they are the same pages with Write and Manage. So if you want for example, not to display Write Post, Disable Write and make Write Page a 1st level page.

  91. gerg

Great plugin, thank you SO much! Exactly what I was looking for… and more!

  92. Damien

@casey : this is not in the field of Custom admin menu.
You just have to edit the “general-template.php” file, somwher near line 50, you have this line :
    $link = $before . ‘‘ . __(’Site Admin’) . ‘‘ . $after;
Just add “/edit.php” behind “‘/wp-admin” (without the quotes !)
That line would then be :
    $link = $before . ‘‘ . __(’Site Admin’) . ‘‘ . $after;

  93. Damien

oops ! sorry fo the code in my last comment, I don’t know how to post code without these side-effects…

Great plugin! I got my menu customized the way I like and was a little disappointed to find that it doesn’t work with the drop down menus for spotmilk. Hope this plugin can be made compatible with the drop down menus for added functionality! :-)

Brilliant! I love it! It installed and set up painlessly and it was perfect for what I wanted. (I’m using wordpress as a content management system.) Thank you.

Barun - thank you for making your Custom Admin Menu plug-in available.

There seem to be some issues with IE7. But maybe we don’t care? Execute buttons and toggles not responding. So, I stopped using IE7. Problem solved. Best regards to you.

  99. Josh

    Hi Barun,

Your plugin looks very useful and I see you have received lots of good feedback. After installing it, I ran into a problem. The first thing I did was move the “Write Page” menu item up into the top row of menus. However, something about doing that has created a situation where, when I click Options to try to make other changes, only the “General Options” page appears. I can’t manage any of my plugins (including this one) because the 2nd row of menus has vanished. I can’t get back to your plugin to undo what I did. And uninstalling the plugin and re-installing didn’t change anything. The only thing I can do is Deactivate.

Please let me know if there is a fix. Also, one suggestion comes to mind. Maybe there should be a permanent link added to the top row of menus so that you can always get back to your plugin to make changes from there.

    Best Wishes,
    Josh

    thx for all the help

  101. ritchie

Hi, I think I have the same problem with the prototype conflict. Apart from that, your plugin is just what I’ve been looking for - great stuff. I hope you can find a fix for the non-draggable Boxes.

  102. Jayme

Great plugin! I always felt that plugin writers nested their admin controls in inappropriate areas. This plugin remedies that!

One question though: Is there ANY admin menu drop down plugin anyones knows of that doesn’t break with Custom Admin Menu in use?

    Hi Barun,

First of all, I apologize for my bad English. It’s not my native language.

I just installed your plugin. And it it works like a charm. I wonder if this plugin can make custom menu for specified role only. What I’m trying to say is if I can make only contributor cannot see “manage” menu. While user with user level above contributor can see it.

    Anyway, thanks for great plugin.

Got the same problem as Josh.
I’m using WP 2.1.2 and tried with *every* browser.

Hi, I installed your plugin 5 min ago to do some tests. It looks good, this is what I’m looking for. OK, During the test I hidden the “Custom admin tool” and save.

Now I can’t see it anymore, I already deactivate the extension, deleted the plugin and installed all over again, but, every time I install the plugin again the old configurations are preserved. What’s going on here?

    Thanks
    Phillip

  107. Tomáš Kapler

Great, it would be just even a bit greater, if i could asign a menu to roles, so e.g. hide some options but only for editors, not for admins

  108. Thierry

    Hi,

Thanks for this plugin. But I think it is not totally compatible with WordPress 2.1. When I choose Yes for “Use the customized administration menu?” without doing anything else. It messed up the presentation of the menu.

Maybe the CSS for the Admin in 2.1 is not the same as the 2.0’s CSS. Could you check please? I would really like to use your plugin.

    Thanks.

  109. Scudfish

I like this idea a lot but I just can’t get it to work with WP 2.1.2. Any chance for an updated?

    Thanks.

Great work. The icon that removes a menu works on (I have been able to remove a menu) but does not work off (I am unable to restore the menu). Thus to restore one item menu, the only one solution is to restore the whole default menu and loose all modifications. Otherwise, could be nice that the best admin menu from frondend (Easy admin access, admin menu with subsection drop-down menus) could work together with your plugin. http://www.100yen.co.uk/wordpress/plugins/easy-admin-access/

Hi Barun, I installed your great plugin with Wordpress 2.1 on a Mac, but it doesn’t seem to work with Safari at all - if clicking on a menu it becomes “sticky” to the mouse….

In Firefox 2.0.0.3 on mac I can hide, rearrange but not use the indent/outdent feature..

After all different dropdown-menu-plugins doesn’t work with your PlugIn, I created my own custom Admin Theme, but now I also have to change your “custom_admin_menu_default CSS to match mine?

I tried to do that, but struggled with your “subsubmenu” (third level), cause it is nested in the submenu - is it possible to give that “third-level-menu” an #id name somewhere to style that level in an easier way?

    Thank’s

I LOVE this plugin, but it keeps suspending itself for no apparent reason. I have a fair few other plugins active, is there a way to foce it to stop suspending itself and revealing all the admin stuff I have hidden, it’s confusing the client!

This works perfectly if I could just remove the suspension and force it to keep working!!
